Little things I do to make myself feel beautiful. 

Recently, I began writing a post that touched on weight, insecurities, self esteem, beauty, and self love… That post turned out to be a lot more difficult than I thought for me to write. 

It all started with me looking at some photographs of myself… I had seen how much weight I had gained and how I felt like I looked like a completely different person. I noticed all of my facial flaws like acne, scars, and my chubby chin and cheeks… 

I got really saddened and started to think really mean and upsetting things about myself. My insecurities blew up and made me very discouraged.

 As I was writing that post, I started crying and couldn’t really put together my thoughts… 

I decided that I wasn’t ready to focus on the negative and deep emotions of that topic, so I decided to pray on that more and write about the little things I do to make me happy and feel beautiful.


Some of these things may seem silly (and they are) but they do actually make me feel better sometimes when I’m feeling a little down about my insecurities and body image… here they are: 

1. I read encouraging scripture. 

The number one thing that I hold true to my heart and soul is that I am created in Gods image! (Genesis 1:27) I go back to the only thing that can ever truly heal me and make me feel better, and that’s the fact that Jesus loves me and pursues me daily. He loves me so much that he took my punishment and my well deserved death. He sees nothing but love and beauty when he looks at me. 

Some of my favorite verses to lift me up in times of insecurity are: 

James 3:9

There are so many more verses that can encourage and show God’s love for you, these are just a few to scratch the surface! 
2. Take a hot shower and shave! 

The whole shaving part sounds a little silly, but for some reason, I always feel great after I do so! I think most women can attest to the truth that shaving makes you feel good. 

 
3. Paint your nails! 

There is something so soothing and relaxing for me when I paint my nails. And fir some reason, I instantly feel more feminine and pretty when I have color on my nails! The only downfall to painting your nails is waiting for them to dry…

4. Workout or go for a walk

There’s no better way to feel better about yourself than to know you are taking care of yourself! I like to go for walks in the evening after work if I don’t go to the gym. 

(Still working on being consistent with going to the gym 5x week)

5. Do your favorite hobby/passion 

For me, it’s writing! So I’ll write and journal and that really helps me to release any negative emotions that I’m bottling up inside. 


These are all just little and basic things that can make a huge change in your attitude and spirit! 


My goal is to stop living in the past (I.e. Looking at old photos of my veld when I was more fit, remembering how I used to be, etc) and focus on what I can do to better myself and do it for the RIGHT REASONS. 

What do you do to cheer yourself up or motivate yourself to do/be better?? 

What do you do to to remember that you are beautiful and there’s no need to be pressured about your appearance??

  1. I loved this post thank you for sharing. I also do little simple things to make me feel beautiful and feel like I can do anything. It takes a lot of positivity and will but we can do it 🙂

  2. These are excellent tips! I also like to do something very healthy, like a highly nutritious meal or going without sugar in anything all day, that makes me feel like I’ve put a “win” on the board for the day. Scriptures though are the tops here. I had a friend send me a 4 page list of encouraging scriptures on the promises of God one time when I was going through something extremely painful in a relationship. I took one per day for the next few months. Man, does it help!

  3. Simple things that make a HUGE difference. What a great list! Thanks for the reminders of Scripture that uplifts us too. There’s a hurting world who needs our confidence, that starts with realizing Jesus loves us so!

  4. This is so important, friend! I struggle with this too but I love all these ideas! One thing that I had a friend tell me a long time ago was to say all the negative things I would say about myself but say them like I was talking about a loved one….ouch. It would make me cringe! I would never tell someone else some of the things I was thinking about myself!! That helped me really refocus my thinking.

  6. I usually settle down and doodle, draw or color to cheer myself up or relax. I agree with working out…those endorphins really have an uplifting effect on the body and mind.

  7. I love, love, LOVE all of these ideas. It’s so awesome that you recognize that it’s not good to dwell in such a negative headspace… we all do it every now and again, but pulling yourself up and out of it is the important part.

  9. I love that you turned your negative thoughts into something positive. With a chronic autoimmune disease, I had a lot of negative thoughts that I realized I had to fight. It’s actually what prompted me to start my blog called Mom’s Small Victories because I want others to turn their overwhelm and negativity into positivity too.

  13. Going for a walk always makes me feel better. In Seattle, it’s often cold and rainy but it STILL makes me feel better to get my heart thumping and the cold air clears my head.

  14. I can definitely understand what you’re going through because I have those same thoughts almost every hour of every day. It’s heartbreaking because if you think about it, from the moment we’re brought into this world, we as women are taught that our self-worth is through our looks. I’ve come to a point in my life where I’m trying to focus on other things and I really think to myself, “You are worth more than your outward appearance.” We all have thoughts, opinions, ambitions, passions, etc. We are multi-layered humans that deserve more than face value. Still, I know that it can be hard to not focus on that, but what I’ve found to be helpful, is to notice when I’m fixating too much on my appearance and then re-direct my thoughts to other things. Anyways, I hope what I said made any sense lol.

  15. I have to say, nothing makes me feel better than taking a nice hot shower! It is even better when I have time to shave my legs. It makes me feel so refreshed and ready to wrangle children all day lol

  16. I love this!! Whenever I need to put a pep in my step or need to feel good i always do the same routine : Workout, Shower, Shave, Nails, Tea, Face Mask. IT makes me feel like a whole new person.

  18. Beautifully written! I think we all have moments where we are hard on ourselves. It’s so important to take the time to appreciate our good qualities instead of focusing on the negative. Shopping always cheers me up, even if it’s something small. Great post!

  21. Great post, you have to make your inner self beautiful first and foremost. I put it off as much as possible but I always feel so much better after my workout. I’ve got to start writing my thoughts down because that can also be therapeutic.
